PD/GWSS Board Decides to Not Formally Declare Grapevine Leafroll Virus a Designated Disease of Wineg

At its January 28th meeting, the Pierce’s Disease and Glassy-winged Sharpshooter (PD/GWSS) Board voted to not recommend that grapevine leafroll virus (GLRV) be formally declared a designated disease of winegrapes. The Board’s decision followed upon a thorough and extensive review by the Board’s Winegrape Pest and Disease Designation Committee of GLRV’s known current and potential impacts in California. The Committee’s review was conducted in response to a request received from a winegrape stakeholder to consider GLRV for designation. Current law allows PD/GWSS winegrape assessment funds to be used to fund research and outreach activities on formally designated pests and diseases of winegrapes. The law gives specific findings which must be made for a pest or disease to qualify for designation. Currently, one pest, the European grapevine moth, has been formally designated as a pest of winegrapes.
